Overall Goal
Soil degradation through soil erosion is the main form of land degradation in the Bosomtwe Biosphere, resulting in nutrient loss, soil physical degradation and salinization and consequently reducing agricultural productivity.
With land degradation being a major problem in the project area, the use of sustainable agricultural and land use practices that promote vegetation cover on lands is our strategy to protect the soil from erosion.
We remain focused on our adoption of agroforestry, growing of cover crops, practices that promote organic matter additions to soils such as mulching ,no –till and addition of organic manure and cultivation of grasses and drought resistant trees to address the challenges of land degradation mitigate the effects of climate change.
The goal is to reduce food insecurity and improve livelihoods of farmers in project areas by restoring degraded land, and returning it to effective and sustainable tree, crop and production, thereby increasing land profitability and landscape and livelihood resilience by the year 2030
Approach and Methodology
The project is designed to operate through bringing key partners from the public and private sectors, across research, extension, market, and governance institutions to work together in an iterative co-learning cycle, where options are tested against context and lessons learnt are fed back into the cycle.
This requires capacity strengthening within these key institutions to facilitate interaction amongst them.
Communities Of Practice & Transfer
The Communities Of Practice on the restoration of degraded lands aims to foster relationships, develop learning situated in practice, create and share new knowledge to restore degraded land, returning it to effective and sustainable tree, crop and livestock production; thereby increasing land profitability and landscape and livelihood resilience
